The White Tower – Thessaloniki’s Iconic Fortress
Let’s take a step back in time and explore one of Thessaloniki’s most iconic landmarks: the White Tower. This 15th-century beauty is not just a monument; it’s a symbol of the city’s resilience, transformation, and rich history.
Built in 1430, right after Thessaloniki fell to the Ottomans, this tower was originally part of the city’s defensive walls. Positioned at the eastern end of the sea wall, it stood guard, one of three towers protecting the city from the sea—part of a formidable fortress complex.
Over the centuries, the White Tower has been known by many names, each reflecting its changing role. In the 16th century, it was called the Lion Tower, and by the 18th century, it was known as the Tower of Kalamaria. But here’s where things get dark—during the 19th century, it was converted into a prison and earned the infamous name: Tower of Blood. Why? Well, it became a site of executions, and legend has it that the blood of those sentenced to death stained the tower’s walls. Yikes.
But here’s the twist in the tale: in 1883, the Ottomans decided to give the tower a new look. They were modernizing, and the grim history of the Tower of Blood didn’t fit the new vision for the city. So, they had it whitewashed—and that’s when it became the White Tower we know today. Fun fact: it was a prisoner named Nathan Guiledi who did the whitewashing, and in exchange, he was granted his freedom! A pretty interesting twist for this historic landmark.
Fast forward to the 20th century, when Thessaloniki became part of Greece. The White Tower got a new role—during World War I, it stored precious archaeological finds. Later, it housed the meteorology lab of Aristotle University and even served in air defense! From a grim prison to a symbol of academic and national pride, the White Tower had truly reinvented itself.
Today, the White Tower stands proudly at 34 meters (112 feet) tall with a perimeter of 70 meters—a museum and a monument to the city’s rich, complex history. It’s one of Thessaloniki’s must-see attractions and offers a window into the city’s past while standing as a symbol of its strength, survival, and transformation.
