New Port of Thessaloniki
The New Port of Thessaloniki (also known as the Container Port or Modern Port) is the contemporary commercial and industrial harbor facility located in Thessaloniki, Greece. It serves as the primary modern shipping and cargo handling center for the city and the broader region.
Unlike the historic Old Port, which focuses on tourism and recreation, the New Port is a fully operational maritime facility designed for large-scale commercial operations. It handles containerized cargo, general cargo, vehicles, and other goods, serving as an important trade gateway for northern Greece and the Balkans.
The New Port features modern infrastructure including container terminals, cargo handling equipment, warehouses, and berthing facilities capable of accommodating large commercial vessels. It plays a vital role in Greece’s economy and regional trade networks, connecting Thessaloniki to ports across the Mediterranean and beyond.
The facility is located separately from the Old Port area, typically situated further along the waterfront or in dedicated port zones. This separation allows the historic center and tourist areas to maintain their character while enabling efficient, large-scale commercial operations.
The New Port is managed by port authorities and operates continuously to support Greece’s import and export activities. It represents the modern, functional side of Thessaloniki’s maritime heritage, complementing the cultural and recreational significance of the Old Port.
